Analyst/Medical Coder (Clairemont Mesa)

A large healthcare organization in San Diego seeks an Analyst/Medical Coder.  This position codes & abstracts medical information from all patient types served at Children's Hospital & Health Center. Coding pertains to the knowledge & use of ICD-9-CM & CPT-4 diagnostic & procedure codes.Coding of diagnoses & procedures is performed on inpatient & outpatient encounters. It includes capturing co-morbidities & complications, procedure code modifiers, appropriate sequencing, assigning DRG's, & APR-DRG's. Data specific to each visit is abstracted into the Epic EMR database for the revenue cycle, research, OSHPD, data comparison studies, & medical record reviews. In addition to coding & abstracting, this position also assists with the Hospital Revenue Cycle process by performing charge capture for patients seen in the Emergency Care Center & satellite Urgent Care Centers.



  • Associate's Degree (Preferred)
  • H.S. Diploma,GED,or Equivalent (Minimum)
  • Area of Study in a Field Related to the Position
  • 1 Year of Experience (Minimum)
  • 2 Years of Experience (Preferred)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (Preferred)
  • Registered Health Info Admin (Preferred)
  • Registered Health Info Tech (Preferred)
  • (Minimum) Knowledge of medical terminology, A&P and pathophysiology.
  • (Minimum) Must be able to follow instructions, have above average problem solving skills and be able to work independently.
  • (Minimum) Able to effectively use coding software.
  • (Minimum) Demonstrated knowledge of official coding conventions and rules established by the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes.
  • (Minimum) Requires knowledge of the business use of computer hardware and software to ensure the effectiveness and quality of the processing and presentation of data.
  • (Minimum) Achievement of an 80% accuracy rate on the pre-employment coding test.
  • (Minimum) RHIA, RHIT, or CCS - or eligible for certification within one year of hire.
  • (Preferred) Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques and surgical procedures; anatomy and physiology; major disease processes; pharmacology.
  • (Preferred) Prefer pediatric coding experience, and coding with APR-DRGs. Knowledge of SOI and ROM coding impacts.
  • (Preferred) Experience working in an electronic medical record environment, preferably Epic.
  • (Preferred) Knowledge of ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS.
