A Dynamic Credit Union is seeking an Underwriter in Anaheim, CA!

Job Summary:

Responsible for the accurate and timely review of any adverse action requests. Monitors the adverse reports on a daily basis. Reviews all requests with underwriting guidelines set by company, its investors (i.e. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), and its business partners (i.e. mortgage insurance providers). Works with mortgage loan originators on either the Mortgage Originations (retail) side or with our Member Credit Unions.

Strong, working-knowledge of automated underwriting systems (AUS) including Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter and tools offered through our Loan Originating System LFC. Ability to trouble-shoot and be a resource for loan originators. Capable of calculating income from simple pay stubs to basic tax returns. Calculates standard mortgage ratios. Reviews property appraisal. Works with other Underwriters and members of Management Team, as needed, to ensure time frames are met.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for accurate and timely review of any adverse action requests.
  • Provides thorough review of the adverse action requests and ensures these satisfy the requirements as set in the Underwriting Procedures.
  • Underwriting knowledge of guidelines set by the company, its investors (i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac), and its business partners (i.e. mortgage insurance providers).
  • Provides thorough review of appraisal and ensures appraisal satisfies company’s board-approval Appraisal Policy.
  • Responsible for thoroughly reviewing “Refer with Caution” loans and elevating such loans to the Mortgage Management Team with decision recommendation.
  • Assist with system (Desktop Underwriter) troubleshooting and maintenance of all related documentation.
  • Assist in training of appropriate personnel on system enhancements and / or changes.
  • Maintains high level of member service, promotes advocacy and continually focuses on improvement in member survey ratings.
  • Acts as a resource for the department on Mortgage related policies and procedures.
  • Helps to ensure staff efforts are focused on achieving goals and are aligned with company’s strategic objectives.
  • Ensures mortgage compliance through “Loan Level” audits.
  • Participates on project teams at the department / organization level and may serve as project manager.
  • Contributes to organizational efforts in process improvement and streamlining efforts.
  • Stays abreast of and develops proficiency in technological advancements and emerging management practices.
  • Supports organizational strategy and helps manage the change process within the department.
  • Ensures that the physical environment is maintained according to company’s standards and that staff appearance reflects the desired level of professionalism.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Apply team and department “Best Practices” and continually work for process and service improvements.
  • In-depth knowledge of ATR/QM and CFPB requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Ability to provide excellent member service throughout the mortgage loan process.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of basic mortgage underwriting
  • Basic knowledge of mortgage lending, real estate contracts and language.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing the mortgage loan process, including:
    • TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Act (TRID)
    • Homeowners Protection Act (HPA)
    • Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)
    • Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA)
    • Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (as related to information privacy)
    • Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA)
    • Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA)
    • Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA)
    • Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act (SAFE Act)
  • Knowledge of Credit Union operations and ability to integrate and communicate critical information to members, vendors, and other team members.
  • Basic knowledge in Automated Underwriting System (DU), Loan Fulfillment Center (LFC), Virtual Loan Folder (VLF), Symitar, and FICS systems.
  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.A/B.S. degree in related field
  • 3+ years of basic mortgage underwriting
  • Advanced knowledge of mortgage lending, real estate contracts and language
  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing the mortgage loan process, including:
    • TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Act (TRID)
    • Homeowners Protection Act (HPA)
    • Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)
    • Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA)

  • Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
