A credit union and financial services company with over $4 billion in assets is seeking an Underwriter II in Anaheim on a direct hire basis.


Responsible for the accurate and timely underwriting of real estate requests: 1st mortgage loans (purchase and refinance transactions) as well as home equity products (loans and lines of credit). Ensures real estate requests satisfy guidelines set by credit union, its investors (i.e. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Charlie Mac), and its business partners (i.e. mortgage insurance providers). Leads underwriting staff in working with loan originators on either the Mortgage Originations (retail) side or the Mortgage Business Development (wholesale) side.

Very strong, working-knowledge of automated underwriting systems (AUS) including Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter and tools offered through Prime Alliance. Ability to trouble-shoot and be a resource for other underwriters and loan originators. Capable of calculating income from simple pay stubs to complex tax returns: personal and corporate. Calculates standard mortgage ratios. Reviews property appraisal. Works with other underwriters and members of Management Team, as needed, to ensure that all underwriting and processing requirements are met within desired parameters.


  • Underwrite loan files and assists loan originators with re-submitting loans through Desktop Underwriter.
  • Underwrite files received from brokers and assists with answering incoming calls received from brokers.
  • Provides thorough review of appraisal and ensures appraisal satisfies credit union's board-approval Appraisal Policy.
  • Functional authority to administer the broker pipeline.
  • Assists department management with reporting and tracking of loan data and statistics.
  • Supports administration of the real estate budget and ensures expense control in all areas including salaries and overtime.
  • Responsible for thoroughly reviewing “Refer with Caution” loans and elevating such loans to Real Estate Management Team with decision recommendation.
  • Responsible for daily review and decision making of all loans input through Prime Alliance for home equity products.
  • Assist with system (Desktop Underwriter) troubleshooting and maintenance of all related documentation.
  • Assist in the training of new employees on FICS LP, Desktop Underwriter, and Prime Alliance.
  • Assist in training of appropriate personnel on system enhancements and / or changes.
  • Weekly rotation of determining daily Real Estate rates.
  • Daily update of real estate rate sheet via Excel spreadsheet, credit union’s internet page, and Prime Alliance rate manager for retail loans as well as fax or e-mail in PDF format of rate sheets to brokers.
  • Maintains high level of member service, promotes advocacy and continually focuses on improvement in member survey ratings.
  • Acts as a resource for the department on Real Estate related policies and procedures.
  • Helps to ensure staff efforts are focused on achieving goals and are aligned with credit union’s strategic objectives.
  • Supports real estate marketing efforts and provides support for credit union products.
  • Ensures real estate compliance through “Loan Level” audits and underwriting loan files.
  • Participates on project teams at the department / organization level and may serve as project manager.
  • Contributes to organizational efforts in process improvement and streamlining efforts.
  • Stays abreast of and develops proficiency in technological advancements and emerging management practices.
  • Supports organizational strategy and helps manage the change process within the department.
  • Ensures that the physical environment is maintained according to credit union’s standards and that staff appearance reflects the desired level of professionalism.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Apply team and department “Best Practices” and continually work for process and service improvements.
  • Ability to provide excellent member service throughout the mortgage loan process.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of credit union operations and ability to integrate and communicate critical information to members, vendors, and other team members.?
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.


  • At least 4 years of mortgage underwriting required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.


  • B.A/B.S. degree in related field preferred.
  • Proficiency in Prime Alliance, Symitar, and FICS systems preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) is also desirable.
